NEW SIXTH FORM AT NEWTON INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Date : 2011-06-19

Opening a new Key Stage is an exciting time in the history of any school. I feel very privileged that I have been given the opportunity to contribute towards the creation of KS5 at NIS. I am also delighted that our Year 11 students will be provided with the continuity of their studies at Newton International School. Sixth Form is the final period of secondary education where students are being prepared for their future academic development at universities and their future career. My role therefore is twofold; on one hand to ensure that our Y12 and Y13 students are provided with a high quality implementation of AS and A2 curricula based on demands of examinations, and on the other hand to motivate and support our students so they do their utmost to fulfil their potential. At NIS teaching and learning is the top priority, we value each person and foster individual learning to develop the whole person. I am confident that the whole Sixth Form community including the staff and the students will work together well in order to raise the ambitions and achievements of every student.

Sixth form is an exciting stage of the students’ lives. Not only do they narrow and deepen their academic focus into only four subjects of their choice but they also take part in professional studies where they are given the opportunity to meet inspiring speakers from local universities and learn about revision techniques, CV building and writing and other useful skills. Next year the new Newton International School Lagoon will add to this thrilling transition between KS4 and KS5 by offering brand new excellent facilities, a new library, study rooms a dedicated space for KS5 for individual study and a Common room which will become a space where our Sixth Form students can relax and socialize. A new smart uniform which includes blazers will distinguish our Year 12 from KS3 and KS4 students and hopefully encourage them to become true role models and mentors for their younger peers. Also a new Prefect System has been created which should become an effective body within which our Sixth Form students in co-operation with Y11 will get the opportunity to lead the school community and contribute towards its development.

All of our internal applicants have undertaken their entrance interviews and finalized their admission process. I am happy to see a great transformation in their attitudes and approach and commitment to their studies which will be so vital in KS5. Now when the exams are finished, I wish them to obtain the best results possible and look forwards to seeing them next September. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mr Anrew Heskett for an excellent organization of the iGCSE exams which has been also recognized by both of the examination boards.
